October 2006 Meeting Minutes

by Donna Franus

The meeting on October 5th was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Roger Dougan. Our guest speaker was not present at the beginning of the meeting, so we proceeded with club business until he arrived.

Club Business

Minutes from the previous meeting were approved as read by Donna Franus. The Treasurer’s report was approved as presented by Jenni Dougan.

Committee Reports:

·        Scholarship Committee – Sandra Shiver is reviewing the contents of the packet to be mailed to the schools.

·        Show Committee – no formal report; Sheila Johnson is still recuperating from her recent illness. Sandra Shiver gave a special slide show presentation during which she recognized of all the many volunteers and “unsung heroes” who made the September show a great success. This touching presentation was greatly appreciated by all.

Old Business:

·        Foal Handling Clinic – Kathy Bagnell and Sandra Shiver gave a report and slide show on HAT’s first-ever Foal Handling Clinic, which was held on September 23rd at Bagnell Farm in Calera. Response to the clinic was extraordinary, with all of the clinic spots filled and a waiting list started. The clinic itself was excellent, with clinician Michael Pat Linderman providing demonstrations and very practical information on how to work with foals in a variety of situations and levels of gentleness.

·        Adult Riding Clinic – date has been set for October 21st and will be held at Sally Thomason’s house in Denison. Gerry Snipes has asked the clinic be limited to six riders.

New Business

·        Executive Committee Meeting – an Executive meeting was set for 7pm on October 10th at the Grayson County Courthouse.

·        Mare & Foal Clinic – Kathy Bagnell is working with the Grayson County Extension Agent on scheduling a speaker for this event, scheduled for January 4th (taking the place of our regular monthly meeting). Sally Thomason is looking into arrangements to cater the event.

Program

Jeff Petska, Chef d’Equipe for the U.S. Reining Team at both the 2002 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez, Spain and the 2006 WEG in Aachen, Germany, gave an awe-inspiring presentation on the event and his role in supporting the team. The highlight of the program was viewing videos of the individual performances of the U.S. team in Aachen, while Jeff pointed out finer details of each run that would not be easily picked up by those unfamiliar with reining.

The meeting was adjourned and HAT Chats were handed out for distribution to the surrounding communities.

The HAT Executive Committee met on October 10th at 7pm. Highlights of the meeting included:

President – Sandra Shiver

Vice President – Robin Chouteau

2nd Vice President – Kathy Bagnell

Secretary – Donna Franus

Treasurer – Jenni Dougan

Current President Roger Dougan has asked that he continue to serve on the Board after he steps down in January.

·        Membership and Communications – Noting low attendance at the October meeting, different ways of contacting members to remind them of upcoming events was discussed. A current roster of members will be provided to the Executive committee for calling members. Postcards were also approved for mailing to current and past members and others to inform them of upcoming HAT events.

·        Adult Riding Clinic – two open slots remain. Notices will be posted on the website and Yahoo group to try to fill them.

·        Mare & Foal Clinic – in an apparent miscommunication, we learned the speaker lined up by the Extension office is scheduled to speak on first aid-related topics. This will be discussed with the Extension agent.

·        Christmas Potluck – a possible schedule change was not approved; this event will still start at 7pm on December 7th. Year-End High Point awards will be presented.
